I know everyone is excited for it but Alvin has been bombarded by phone calls all day and surprise visits to the nursery. We are asking that you don’t call him or go down to the nursery at this time. About Alvin Tsuruda and Waihale Products Nursery After 30+ years as a Nurseryman Alvin Tsuruda is finally retiring and closing down his nursery Waihale Products. For years he has run his nursery business as a one man solo operation. He specializes in traditional anthuriums from giant obake to mini many of which he has hybridized himself. He has also many collector plants not commonly found in garden shops. In addition, Alvin has been a big supporter and advocate of agriculture here in Hawaii and has been involved with various community organizations such as the Hawaii Farm Bureau and the Botanical Gardens. Anyone who knows Alvin can truly say he is nothing short of amazing. He is caring, extremely knowledgeable, and just genuinely a nice guy. Although relatively new to the social media scene Alvin is very active contributing member on the Facebook group '808 Green Thumbs' often answering many of the other members questions about plant identification, care tips, and advice. Even though he's "retiring" from his nursery he still plans to be active within the agriculture community and also perhaps taking up more hobbies like photography or fishing. 2020-2022: Difficult but still positive! These past two years haven't exactly been the easiest for Alvin for various reasons from not being able to have any ONGA Washington Middle School Plant Sales due to Covid restrictions (which was his primary source of income) and most recently a serious leg injury resulting in surgery and being out of commission for several months which has incurred a lot of medical expenses. Despite all of this he has managed to main a positive attitude. Retirement and Nursery Closing Sale: What will be available? Let's all help Alvin out by giving him well wishes on his "retirement" and helping him by purchasing his plants and other nursery items (tools, trays, etc.). Plants that will be available include: anthuriums, philodendrons, alocasia. other aroids, ti leave cuttings and plants, palms, ferns, pentagonia wendlandii, ohia plants, gingers, begonia, and many more. Cash sales are the preferred method, but credit card and Venmo purchases are also welcome. AUCTION: Specimen plants, rarities, and other items Some of his larger specimen plants, rarities, and other items will be auctioned off via the Instagram platform at the username @waihaleproducts_auctions. Pick up of the plant or item won will be on one of the sale dates of your choice (Sat 2/26, Sun 2/27, or Sat 3/12). Free Plants with purchase There will be a limited supply of some free plants with purchase BYOB! If at all possible please Bring Your Own Boxes for your purchases! Only a limited supply of boxes will be available. Time Slot Reservations* Due to Covid and limited parking we are trying to manage the amount of people at the nursery at a given time. If you are interested please sign up and reserve a designated time slot. You will be allowed 45min to browse and purchase plants and the other items.
