Description
Society-First is hosting A Day of Empathy in conjunction with Dream Corps-Justice on March 25, 2022, at the Capitol in Tallahassee. A direct action event that will be held on the steps of the capitol building on Friday, March 25, 2022, at 1 pm. Society-First is proud to be selected to host Dream Corps Justice's annual Day of Empathy event for the state of Florida. Our goal is to bring awareness to the fact that Florida has more of its citizens incarcerated with Life Without Parole, aka known as "walking death sentences" than 30 other states COMBINED, and the Confederate laws that are behind the development of this carceral culture. Topic: How mass incarceration does nothing to safeguard society from continued victimization (neither criminology nor economically), and how such an unforgiving system has been a sociological plight to many of our communities. Goal: The goal this year is to inform legislators, government officials, and citizens about the need for sentencing reform, in particular the fact that Florida has more Life Without Parole sentences than two-thirds of the entire country. Speakers: Denise Caffo, President/CEO of Society-First (Introduction) Representative Dianne Hart (The Removal of Indentured Servitude from the State's Constitution) Pastor Kenneth Sharpton Glasgow (History of Florida's Life Sentences) Nina Hodges White (The Unconstitutionality of Florida's Life Sentences) Neil Volz (The importance for Returning Citizens Securing Their Restoration of Rights) Micah Turner(The Positive Impact of a Restorative Criminal Justice System) *as Covid and schedules dictate speakers are subject to change The Empathy Network grew out of Dream Corps JUSTICE’s first National Day of Empathy in March of 2017, back when their program was known as #cut50. The Day of Empathy is a day of action to generate empathy on a massive scale for millions of Americans impacted by the criminal justice system. On March 25, 2022, Society-First will host a celebration of the Day of Empathy for the state of Florida. The Empathy Network has also been responsible for the passage of numerous bills to reform the criminal justice system at the state and local level and played an integral role in the passage of the federal First Step Act.
