NEW YORK CITY — A sole New York City hospital is among the 50 best in America, according to a new Healthgrades ranking. Lenox Hill Hospital's quality and clinical excellence puts it in the top 1 percent of hospitals nationwide, the ranking found. Three other New York City hospitals — NYU Langone Health Tisch Hospital, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian Queens — garnered spots in the top 250 facilities, Healthgrades found. "It is crucial to know the top-performing hospitals in your community and look to these centers of clinical excellence to support you and your family's health long-term," Burt Kann, who serves as Healthgrades' executive vice president and head of product, said in a statement. "Many individuals choose a specialist without considering the quality of the hospital where that doctor treats patients. These questions need to be asked, and Healthgrades has the answers." New York City's hospitals, both public and private, have weathered an intense two years during the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic strained many facilities to the breaking point, with some bearing the virus's brunt in March 2020 and others dealing with staff shortages. The city's metro area has 61 hospitals, according to the state Department of Health. The Healthgrades ranking is based on Medicare inpatient data from 2018 to 2020, according to the study. Hospitals in the ranking have "consistently delivered better than expected clinical outcomes for their patients," the study states. "In fact, if all hospitals as a group performed similarly to hospitals achieving Healthgrades America's 250 Best Hospitals Award™ on average, 160,256 lives could potentially have been saved," the study states.
