DETROIT, MI — Three people died following a crash on I-94, near Outer Drive, in Detroit Monday morning, Michigan State Police said.
Troopers said they were called to eastbound I-94 and Outer Drive shortly before 2 a.m. following reports of a crash.
Police said a preliminary investigation shows a Chevrolet Camaro — driven by a 39-year-old woman and with a 38-year-old female passenger — was driving at a high rate of speed on eastbound I-94 when it struck the back end of a Mercury SUV that was also headed east. The lone occupant of the SUV was a 61-year-old driver, police said.
All three passengers were transported to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead, police said. The freeway was closed until around 5 a.m., police said.
Excessive speed and alcohol are factors in the crash, police said.
