ALAMEDA, CA — The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded a $4.4 million grant to refurbish the Alameda Ferry Terminal, officials said Friday. The San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority will receive the grant to rehab the Alameda terminal to ensure passenger safety and a state of good repair, according to a news release from the federal agency. The grant is part of a $47.5 million grant program for passenger ferry projects around the country, awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration. "Passenger ferries are an important mode of transportation across the country, providing thousands of people with access to employment, education, and other critical needs," said K. Jane Williams, the transit agency's acting administrator, in a news release Friday. The agency received 19 eligible proposals totaling approximately $102 million in funding requests from 14 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
