NEWTOWN, CT — A proposal to build 345,000-square-foot warehouse on 105 acres off Exit 9 of Interstate 84 in Newtown is being met with resistance from some residents who say it would be an environmental calamity, the News-Times reported. At issue is the property's wetlands, which the plan by New York-based Wharton Industrial would impact, though Wharton said at a recent hearing that it would replace some wetlands it would disturb. Those who oppose the proposal claim it could adversely affect the wetlands' ability to function properly. The company plans to put 75 truck loading bays, more than 350 parking spaces and spaces for 50 tractor trailers at the facility; the structure alone would measure 8 acres. In 2018, a much larger proposal, which including an office building and warehouse, received a wetlands permit, but that project never came to fruition.
