'Weather Not Cooperating' To Get Through Braintree School Year

BRAINTREE, MA — Braintree Public Schools has used four of its five snow days built into the school calendar, and with plenty of winter left, the district may have to explore new options to get to the required 180 days of school. "The weather is simply not cooperating much with us this year," Superintendent Jim Lee said at Monday night's school committee meeting. "This is something we are monitoring." If there are no more snow days, grades one through eight will have their last day of school on June 23. Braintree High School, though, needs to go until June 28, because three days of classes were canceled at the start of the school year because of problems with the building. At first, Braintree High School's opening was scheduled for Sept. 1., 2021. It was delayed three days when a bathroom water leak damaged the building's electrical system. Then, school was delayed another day for asbestos testing after a floor tile got pulled up during maintenance work. Lee said he's spoken with state education officials about possible alternative ways to meet the 180-day school requirement.
