Press release from City of Fort Worth:
February 07, 2022
William Cathey enlisted in the U.S. Army in November of 1866 as a way to support himself. Like any other soldier, William marched, ate, laughed and struggled alongside his fellow soldiers, but he had one massive secret. Underneath the rough, sweat-stained Buffalo Soldier uniform was female ex-slave Cathey Williams.
Come to the Central Library and hear past president of the Texas Buffalo Soldier Association RosieLeetta "Lee" Reed present "William" – the story of the only documented female Buffalo Soldier. Participants will also learn about the lives of cowboys (and girls), the Buffalo Soldiers and life on the frontier.
The event will be held in-person at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, in the Tandy Lecture Hall at the Central Library.
RosieLeetta "Lee" Reed founded the Lakeside Riders Youth Outreach and Community Services, a nonprofit dedicated to providing positive avenues for the energies of disadvantaged youth. Her organization teaches youth ages 6-18 the fundamentals of horseback riding, hunting, fishing and camping. The legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers is also emphasized. As Lakeside Riders develop in the program, they perform in rodeos, parades and honor guards. Her efforts have resulted in multiple awards such as the Frist Humanitarian Award from Medical City of Dallas and the Jefferson Award, the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Award for Outstanding Public Service Benefiting Communities.
