MEMPHIS, TN — A man was found dead after his house in the Bethel Grove area caught fire early Tuesday, according to the Memphis Fire Department. The man's name has not been released pending identification by the family, and the cause of death will be determined by the Shelby County Medical Examiner's Office, fire officials said. The fire at a one-story house located at 2010 LaBelle Street was caused by a power surge due to an improper use of a generator, and the home did not have a working smoke alarm, authorities said. FOX 13 reported that the man's house did not have electricity because of an area power outage. Firefighters received the call just before 2:30 a.m. and had the fire under control by 2:44 a.m., officials said. The house suffered $25,000 in damage, according to authorities.
