SOUTHAMPTON, NY — A kayak was found unmanned and adrift in the ocean off Dune Road in Southampton Wednesday, the U.S. Coast Guard said. According to the USCG Sector Long Island Sound, information is being sought on the owner of the olive green Sun Dolphin kayak found adrift near Dune Road S. Lt. Jennifer Sheehy of the USCG Sector Long Island Sound said there were no personal belongings found in the kayak Wednesday morning. A search was conducted by Suffolk County aviation, USCG Station Cape Cod and USCG Station Shinnecock, as well as Southampton Town Police, she said. "Whether we find a person's belongings in the kayak or not, unless we can identify the owner and make sure he or she is safe, we don't know whether the kayak just washed up on the beach or if someone fell off," Sheehy said. That's why it's so important to label kayaks with a sticker that includes a name and phone number, something that would be an "incredible help," she said. Identification stickers can be found at any USCG auxiliary team, she said. No other information was immediately available, the Coast Guard said, urging kayakers to wear life vests and paddle responsibly.
