Scholastic Art, Writing Awards Given To 15 District 202 Students

PLAINFIELD, IL — Fifteen students from Plainfield Central and Plainfield South high schools have won a combined 31 prestigious Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, district officials announced Tuesday. In this year's Scholastic competition, 948 students submitted a total of 2,351 entries. Students in grades 7 through 12 nationwide can submit works of art or writing for a chance to win scholarships and have their work exhibited or published by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. The contest, since 1923, is sponsored by the Scholastic book company, and entries are judged by renowned artists and writers. Past winners include Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King and John Updike. Plainfield South senior Vivianne Angulo is one of five American Vision nominees from the suburban Chicago region. Her ceramic sculpture, "Blossoming," will move on to compete for the region's Best of Show Award in New York.
