Phoenix Judge Rosa Mroz Dies Days After Being Hit By A Car

PHOENIX, AZ — Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Rosa Mroz died Saturday from injuries she suffered when a car hit her while she was crossing the street on foot last week, according to police. Mroz, 56, was crossing the street near the intersection of Camelback Road and 56th Street around 9:15 a.m. last Tuesday when a Hyundai hit her, police said. She was taken to a local hospital in extremely critical condition and was pronounced dead on Saturday, according to police. Police accused the driver of the Hyundai of not stopping for a red traffic light, police said in a news release. "Judge Mroz was a gifted jurist, a dedicated public servant and a true friend," said Superior Court Presiding Judge Joseph Welty, the Associated Press reported. In honor of Mroz, Gov. Doug Ducey ordered that all state building flags be lowered Monday to half-staff. Mroz became a judge in 2004 when she was appointed by then-Gov. Janet Napolitano. "An advocate for justice, dutiful public servant and transformational leader, Judge Mroz will be missed," Ducey said in a statement. Mroz headed the court's Probate and Mental Health Department from 2010 to 2013, the Associated Press reported. In 2012, Mroz received a judicial achievement award from the Arizona Supreme Court. The Probate and Mental Health Department in 2013 won achievement awards from the National Association of Court Management and the National Association of Counties.
