RIVERHEAD, NY — A man was arrested after he told authorities he had been robbed at knifepoint in the parking lot of the Suffolk County Supreme Court facility in Riverhead — then admitted he'd lied, police said According to Riverhead Town Police, on September 17 at 10 p.m., a 911 call came in about a robbery in the parking lot on Court Street. Charles H. Tyler, a 51-year-old homeless man, reported that he was pushed to the ground by two unknown men who stole $600 from him while displaying a knife, police said. The Riverhead Police Department's detective squad responded to further investigate and Tyler gave a written statement consistent with his initial report to the officers, police said. An extensive investigation ensued and it was determined that the events reported and that were detailed in Tyler's written statement did not occur, police said. Tyler was again interviewed by the Riverhead Police detectives and admitted that he had lied in his original statement, police said. He was arrested and charged with making a punishable false written statement; he was also arrested on a bench warrant out of Riverhead Justice Court, police said.
