JOB RESPONSIBILITIES REGULAR a. Keep all church entrances and yard clear of debris/litter. Keep leaves, sand, and dirt away from entrances; the sexton should regularly pick up trash that accrues on the campus from school traffic, parishioners, and hikers/bikers; the sexton will maintain neatness and tidiness in all outside entrance areas b. On average, 6-8 hours of weekly work will be assigned by the director of the Day School c. Offer feedback to parish administrator if all buildings have not been properly cleaned by the janitorial service as defined in the contract; even when properly cleaned, the sexton will offer basic supplemental cleaning (wiping down counters, throwing away trash, breaking down boxes, whatever is needed, etc.) d. Make sure all bathroom/kitchen areas are clean and have adequate supplies as needed; provide inventory list of needed supplies to Parish Administrator, who will tend to the matter e. Organize and maintain two kitchen areas (parish hall and education wing) f. Run errands during the week, as needed (e.g., renting a steam cleaner, picking up supplies, hauling off junk, etc.) g. Monitor trash and recycle bins for campus use and vendor pickup; on occasion, empty and recycle trash in an appropriate manner h. Close/ lock entrances/exits as required after special events i. Attend Tuesday morning staff meetings j. Perform needed set-up (tables, chairs, pews etc.) and clean-up before and after weddings, funeral services and other functions and events k. Sunday morning: 7am to 1pm (or when Sunday work is complete), duties to be assigned later (cleaning coffee pots, setting up rooms, cleaning up Sunday school, picking up doughnuts, assisting with other duties as needed) l. Perform routine maintenance and basic repairs including carpentry, plumbing and electrical; the sexton is not expected to be a carpenter, electrician or a master plumber, but he/she will need to coordinate, at times, with services offering such services, as well as have a system in place for speedily handling tasks outside his/her expertise; the sexton will sometimes serve as a liaison for technicians and tradesmen engaged to perform work on the church property AS NEEDED a. Report safety and repair issues b. Clean doors and windows within reach c. Clean light fixtures d. Monitor all lights and replace bulbs as needed; work with a parishioner with electrical expertise of church e. Monitor lawn/plant needs for sprinkler system use; work with St. Michael’s parishioner who maintains the sprinkler system; assist with basic grounds upkeep, weeding, etc. f. Assist in taking down and putting back seasonal decorations g. Make sure all tools, equipment etc. are properly maintained and stored appropriately h. Assist Parish Administrator with ad-hoc campus clean-up days i. Presence and an “extra set of hands” at parish wide occasions, including parish-wide events j. Other duties as assigned by parish administrator and day school director REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required: • Education and experience: High School diploma or GED, with three to five years related experience or training preferred, but not required • The ability to read, communicate, comprehend and carry out instructions, short correspondence and memos • Proficiency with email and text messages (for more immediate needs) • The candidate for this position must have adequate reliable transportation • The candidate must be a self-starter, capable of taking initiative while at the same time being responsible and accountable to other staff members with whom he or she will be working • Work well with a team and enjoy the ongoing process of learning, challenge, and growth that the job requires • This is a church job. The sexton need not be religious, per se, but he/she must respect, value, believe in, and seek to further the mission of the church PHYSICAL DEMANDS The individual in this position must possess physical and sensory ability necessary to safely and successfully perform all essential job functions and responsibilities. This includes but is not limited to: · The ability to safely work with basic tools, including power tools · The ability to climb steps and ladders as well as to bend, pull and push · The ability to move and carry objects up to 35 lbs.
