Awakenings Treatment Center joins call to prioritize mental wellbeing this World Mental Health Day AGOURA HILLS, California – With unprecedented numbers of people suffering from mental distress amid the COVID-19 pandemic, it's never been a more important time to shine a spotlight on the importance of recognizing and treating mental health disorders. On October 10, Awakenings Treatment Center, a premier addiction treatment facility in Southern California, will join with mental health organizations and providers from around the world in celebrating World Mental Health Day. The celebration is part of global initiative to raise awareness of mental health and mobilize efforts to support mental health care. "We are living in uncertain and stressful times, and many people are experiencing aggravated mental health symptoms or struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues for the first time," said Awakenings Treatment Center founder Dr. Shari Corbitt. "World Mental Health Day is an opportunity to focus attention on the vital need to prioritize mental wellbeing so that we can begin to heal ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities." One in every four people is affected by a mental, neurological or substance use disorder at some point during their lives, according to the World Health Organization. These disorders are on the rise, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has created heightened fear, anxiety, isolation and uncertainty for millions of people around the world. In California, many communities have also been dealing with the threat of displacement, property damage, and poor air quality from this year's raging wildfires. Corbitt said she's noticed a steep increase in clients with anxiety and depressive symptoms related to the pandemic. In fact, a recent Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that more than half of American adults reported mental health challenges due to worry and stress over the coronavirus. Many cited difficulty sleeping or eating, worsening chronic conditions and increases in alcohol consumption or substance use. "We know people are suffering, and we want them to know there is help available," said Corbitt. "We encourage those concerned about their own or a loved one's mental health to reach out." Awakenings Treatment Center provides state-of-the-art care for people suffering from a wide range of serious mental health disorders, including post traumatic stress disorder, major depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, and schizophrenia. The center also treats clients with drug addiction, chronic pain, trauma, autism spectrum disorder, and dual diagnosis disorders. In addition, Awakenings provides a one-of a-kind specialized program supporting the LGBTQ community. --Awakenings Treatment Center is located at 28720 Roadside Drive, Suite 200, in Agoura Hills.
