J Dilla: Celebrating the Life and Beats of James Dewitt Yancey
Join Chicago's finest MC's, vocalists, and instrumentalists in Chicago's own tribute to the life of J Dilla, the iconic hip hop producer whose influence has been felt across genres. The event features the world premieres of two suites based on Dilla's music. The Crate Digging Suite recreates beats he produced for Slum Village, Common, Erykah Badu, and others alongside their original samples. The Yancey Boys Suite is a full orchestration of Dilla's posthumous album Yancey Boys (produced with his brother Illa J) for large ensemble. Featuring MCs Sam I Am the MC, DrxQuinnx, and F.A.B.L.E.; vocalists Alysha Monique, Bobby Wonderfull, and Thaddeus Tukes; and a 21-piece big band. Co-produced with People's Center for Cultural & Contemporary ArtsMusic. Direction and arrangements by Nickolas Kaplan.
Opening DJ set: Joe Kollege
