FREEPORT, NY — A new hotel has been given preliminary approval to start construction in Freeport. The Town of Hempstead Industrial Development Agency (IDA) said a business group would get a package of economic incentives in building a 100-room hotel and conference center on the Nautical Mile. Syosset-based NBD Holding LLC extends to build a Hilton Garden Inn at a total cost of $43 million. Pending final approval, the hotel would be 89,000-square feet on 1.6 acres of vacant land, the IDA said in a news release. The hotel would sit on the site of the former Hunter Pointe Marina and The Schooner Restaurant on Woodcleft Avenue. "This is a great project that will develop the vacant tract that once houses The Schooner Restaurant that was destroyed in a hurricane more than a decade ago, IDA CEO Fred Perola said in a statement. "If granted final approval, it has the potential to revitalize a part of the Nautical Mile that needs a shot in the arm. It will bring tourists and business travelers who will infuse the local economy." The Village of Freeport has granted site plan approval for the project, which will take up to 24 months to complete. Completion is anticipated in the spring of 2024.
