WESTFIELD, NJ — A woman drove into a telephone pole on Mountain Avenue in Westfield Monday afternoon. Westfield Police said it was the result of drowsy driving.
A 68-year-old woman from Fanwood crashed her brown Fiat into a utility pole after falling asleep at the wheel, according to Sgt. Michael Walsh. This section of Mountain Avenue will remain closed until all hazards have been addressed.
Westfield Police sent out a Nixle alert at 1:24 p.m. to avoid Mountain Avenue between New Providence Road and N. Chestnut Street — in the area of the 800 block. Police said the closure will require a detour of traffic for several hours.
The pole split from the impact of the crash and remained hanging in midair, held only in place by the telephone wires attached. See photo on Tapinto.
Walsh said the woman was driving south on Mountain Avenue when she fell asleep and hit the pole.
No injuries were reported and PSE&G is currently assessing the damage of the pole.
