Westbrook Receives State Grant For Sidewalk Project

WESTBROOK, CT — The state Department of Transportation has awarded $8.2 million in grants to 17 municipalities across the state to fund local projects supporting improved mobility and accessibility, as well as pedestrian and bicycle safety. Westbrook will receive $197,578 for YMCA pedestrian accessibility sidewalk connections at Essex Road (CT Route 153) and Spencer Plains Road (CT Route 166), according to a statement from Gov. Ned Lamont. The Community Connectivity Grant Program provides construction funding for local initiatives that to improve safety and accessibility for bicyclists and pedestrians. "These road improvement projects are smart investments that will further enhance our state's quality of life," Lamont said. "These projects will not only make our neighborhoods safer but will support the growth of the economy while also becoming more pedestrian-friendly and more environmentally-conscious." The funding was approved by the State Bond Commission in its December meeting. Municipalities that have been selected to receive grants will be expected to complete the project within three years.
