Description
NAPERVILLE, IL — An early morning fire gutted a home on Radcliff Road in unincorporated Naperville Monday, causing part of the first floor to collapse into a crawlspace. Firefighters struggled to put out the blaze amid extreme weather conditions and a water supply that was limited because there were no fire hydrants nearby.
Fire crews were called to the 4S500 block of Radcliff Road just before 5 a.m. and used an attack hose to battle the flames that were inside the home. Part of the first floor collapsed into a crawl space, forcing firefighters to exit the building, a news release from Lisle-Woodridge Fire District said.
The residents escaped safely and were not hurt in the blaze, but one firefighter sustained an injury that was not life-threatening. The firefighter was taken to a nearby hospital to be evaluated and then was released.
Deputy Fire Chief Steve Demas told Patch the fire left the home uninhabitable and that the family will be displaced "for an extended period of time."
The Lisle-Woodridge Fire District was assisted by the fire crews from Naperville, Downers Grove, Warrenville, Wheaton, Lombard, York Center, Pleasantview, Westmont and Lemont.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
