WILLOWBROOK, IL — A man shot a pregnant woman late last month on Route 83 in Willowbrook after getting into an argument at a nearby grocery store, authorities said. Lawrence Grant, 38, of Chicago, was arrested on a number of charges in connection with the shooting, police said. The woman, who was shot in the back, was taken to a local hospital, where her baby was delivered while she was in surgery, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. She was reported as being nearly nine months pregnant. About 7 p.m. Jan. 28, Grant, the woman and another person got into an argument that turned physical at a local grocery store, police said. They all left in different cars. Heading south on Route 83, Grant followed the woman and fired shots at her, causing her to crash, prosecutors said. About three hours later, Grant was found at University of Chicago Medical Center in Chicago, where he was admitted for an unrelated matter, police said. The car he was driving was discovered on fire about a block from the hospital, police said. Grant was immediately taken into custody upon his release from the hospital. Grant was charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted intentional homicide of an unborn child, aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated battery to a pregnant woman, prosecutors said. "Thankfully, no innocent motorists were injured and, while still hospitalized, Mr. Grant's alleged target and her baby are expected to survive," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. "This defendant's alleged violent behavior put the motoring public at risk and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
