TUCSON, AZ — A planned in-person graduation ceremony for the class of 2020 at the University of Arizona, postponed from May, has been canceled due to ongoing coronavirus concerns, according to a letter the school sent to recent graduates.
The event was tentatively scheduled for Oct. 30, during homecoming weekend in Tucson.
"Due to the nature of large gatherings wherein social distancing and limiting exposure are not realistic, we are unable to host this event or any in-person convocations or celebrations in December," the letter said.
The university acknowledged that many students had been looking forward to the ceremony and will be disappointed in its continued postponement but that an in-person event will be held when it is safe to do so.
U of A reported 150 new cases in the community on Tuesday. The number of total cases on campus is now 709.
Regarding celebrations for December graduates, the university said more details will be shared by specific colleges and departments shortly.
"Your graduation from the University of Arizona is a huge achievement we want to honor," the letter continued. "Your health is just as paramount. We are looking forward to the day when we can all celebrate your success in person."
