TUCSON, AZ — Park rangers are searching for suspects after eight protected saguaro cacti were found chopped or cut down at Saguaro National Park near Tucson. The cacti, which ranged from 1 foot tall to 10 feet, were found slashed on the Scenic Trail in the western part of the national park, according to Superintendent Leah McGinnis. "All plants, animals, and resources in the national park are protected," McGinnis said in a statement. "Damage to saguaro cacti is especially disheartening because they are the reason for the park's establishment." The cacti grow very slowly and hold special significance in Arizona, as they live for hundreds of years. A 10-foot-tall cactus could be 100 years old, according to McGinnis.
