Bring the islands to Boyertown, PA with fun classes in the art of Lei making and the hula. Debi Velasco teaches Hula and Lei making every year at our Annual Funky Frets Uke Fest in October. Festova; attendees enjoy learning the hula each year that we decided to offer a class at the music store for anyone in the community to come learn this beautiful folk dance from Hawaii. Students will learn the folk dance of our 50th state, the Hula. Simple steps and hand motions will combine to tell a story. This is fun for all ages and you do not need any previous knowledge to participate. Debi has over 40 years experience dancing and teaching hula. She also handmakes gorgeous leis, a true artist. Please pre-register! If you have ever attended a Funky Frets Uke Fest, then you probably know how much fun the Hula and Lei making classes can be. Debi Velasco will be visiting in March for a weekend of Lei Making and Hula classes. These classes are great for kids and adults. Learn a beginner hula dance on Friday or an intermediate class on Saturday right before our Uke Jam. Same for lei making, classes for any skill level on Friday and Saturday. FRIDAY: Braided Ribbon Lei class. Fri. 3/18- 6:00pm-6:30pm A simple weave of 2 satin ribbons makes a lovely bracelet, headband or lei. Beginner level Class time: 30 minutes All supplies provided Beginner Hula Fri. 3/18 6:45pm-7:30pm Straw Fuzzy Lei w/Kukui Nuts. Fri. 3/18- 7:45pm-8:30pm Fuzzy yarn sections and kukui nuts make this pretty lei very easy to make. Beginner level Class time: 45 minutes All supplies provide SATURDAY Ilima-style short lei Saturday, March 19th- 12:00pm-1:00pm 2 colors of satin ribbon sewn together to make a short length lei, suitable for ukulele players to wear or anyone really. Intermediate Beginner level (simple sewing skill needed) Class time: 60 minutes All supplies provided Intermediate Hula 1:15pm-2:15pm *Stick around for our Ukulele Jam at 2:30pm for a chance to perform the Hula you just learned!!! Curt & Bernadette Sheller and their daughter Kelly Thompson opened Funky Frets on June 30th, 2012. Our showroom includes guitars, ukuleles, banjos, and much more! We carry over 100 ukuleles, electric and acoustic guitars, accessories, drumsticks, violin/viola strings and amps…just to name a few categories. Our store and events have uke enthusiasts traveling from all over the East Coast and beyond. We love meeting and chatting with each person that visits our shop. We really appreciate the support and look forward to growing our store, events and Uke Festival. Funky Frets of Boyertown is a first class music store and professional one-on-one private lesson studio with a monthly selection of workshops and group instruction options. We also offer lessons via Skype and FaceTime for those of you out of town, but are still looking for the benefits of lesson’s with Curt Sheller.
