STAMFORD, CT — Similar to trends seen around the country, COVID-19 cases in Stamford continue to decline. According to the latest data from the city of Stamford's COVID-19 dashboard, as of Feb. 2, there were 45 cases per 100,000 residents on a seven-day average. That number is down from 65.3 on Jan. 25. The daily positivity rate in Stamford on Feb. 2 was 9 percent. On Jan. 25, the rate was 14 percent. A mask mandate has been instituted in Stamford since Dec. 21 when cases skyrocketed due to the omicron variant of the coronavirus. Stamford Mayor Caroline Simmons told Patch that her administration is monitoring the changing COVID-19 data closely. "We continue to consult with public health officials and monitor case rates carefully and will make any decision related to lifting the mask mandate based on current available data and what is in the interest of the public health and safety of Stamford residents," Simmons said. In Stamford Public Schools, as of Feb. 4, there were 76 new COVID-19 cases reported within the district, with 10 in quarantine. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tamu Lucero said in her weekly message last Friday said the district will continue to introduce and remove mitigating strategies based on the recommendations and requirements from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Connecticut Department of Public Health and Connecticut State Department of Education, as well as the Stamford Health Department, Stamford Medical Advisory, and partnerships with members of the Stamford Hospital. "As the health pandemic evolves, we will continue to use these organizations to make determinations about when it is appropriate to eliminate, adjust or add mitigating strategies such as barriers, masks, and social distancing in Stamford Public Schools," Lucero said. "Thank you again for your patience as we make these very complicated decisions on behalf of our students and staff."
