Press release from the San Antonio Public Library: Reyna Martinez 4 February 2022 San Antonio Public Library Celebrates & Honors Black History Month Virtual programs, book lists, and activities throughout February SAN ANTONIO (February 4, 2022) – San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) is acknowledging and recognizing Black History Month and the contributions, achievements, and activism of Black Americans throughout history. It is a time to reflect on the past and look ahead to the future. SAPL invites the community to take part in celebrating this observance by joining us for a special selection of programming, browsing through staff recommended book lists, and more. SAPL is excited to welcome compelling children's and young adult author Varian Johnson for a discussion about his life and work, and to answer your questions! Recommended for ages 8 and up. Join us for this virtual Zoom event with author, Tiff Smitty, as she discusses her book, Be My Peace. Towards a Certain Future: Preserving African American Cultural Memory Tuesday, February 15, 6 – 7 PM Register at mysapl.org/events or here. African Americans in San Antonio have a zeal for preserving their cultural legacy and heritage but the transformation of certain historic spaces due in part to gentrification leads to the question: is enough being done to preserve African American cultural memory and heritage in this time of change? The San Antonio African American Funeral Program Collection Saturday, February 19, 3 – 4 PM Carver Branch Library (3350 E Commerce St., 78220) The Texana & Genealogy Department at the Central Library has a collection of over 4,500 donated funeral programs, many of which have been scanned and are available online through the Portal to Texas History. Come and learn about this interesting historical collection and how you can contribute to it. Open to all ages.
