PHOENIX — A Phoenix police officer has made threats of violence against the city's mayor, according to a spokesperson for the mayor.
The spokesperson for Mayor Kate Gallego told Patch that the threats were "credible" and that an investigation is underway.
"The mayor's office is aware of a credible threat made by a member of the Phoenix Police Department to harm the mayor," said Jennifer L'Ecuyer, director of communications for the mayor's office. "We are also aware an investigation is underway. Additional police protection has been provided to the mayor."
The Phoenix Police Department told Patch that it is conducting an internal investigation while the Tempe Police Department handles the criminal investigation into the officer in question.
"The Phoenix Police Department takes claims of misconduct by its officers seriously," said Sgt. Mercedes Fortune, spokesperson for the Phoenix police. "While the investigation is ongoing the involved officer has been assigned to home."
A spokesperson for the Tempe Police Department confirmed that it opened an investigation into the Phoenix police oficer on Friday. It was opened at the request of the Phoenix Police Department.
Gallego has been mayor since March 2019 and is up for re-election Nov. 3.
