VESTAVIA HILLS, AL — Amid concerns over COVID-19 within the football program, the Vestavia Hills High School football team has canceled all practices until August 20, and canceled its first two games of the season.
"Over the past several days, Vestavia Hills High School athletics staff have been monitoring several students and coaches in the varsity football program who recently tested positive for COVID-19 or were in close contact with individuals who tested positive," read a statement issued by the school.
"Based on the guidelines of the school system's 2020 Reopening Plan, and in consultation with medical professionals associated with the team, Vestavia Hills High School announced today that it would suspend varsity football practice through Thursday, August 20. All varsity football activities will resume on Friday, August 21."
Vestavia was slated to play Mountain Brook August 21 and Homewood August 28. Both Mountain Brook and Homewood are 6A schools and would not affect Vestavia's record within its region.
