Description
VESTAVIA HILLS, AL — Heavy rainfall throughout he morning in the Birmingham area has caused flooding in several areas across the metro, including Vestavia Hills. Flooding has prompted Vestavia police to close a couple of the city's busiest roads in the city until further notice.
A report by the Vestavia Hills Police Department said Highway 31 North and South Bound lanes were closed between Pizitz Drive and Montreat Parkway Monday, but have re-opened. Dolly Ridge Road at Meadowlawn Drive remains closed.
A mail truck became stuck in flood waters on Highway 31 earlier in the day, as reported by WBRC.
The rain and flood conditions are far from over, according to the National Weather Service in Birmingham. The NWS said slow moving showers will keep flash flooding chances high, and that between 2 and 4 inches of rain has been reported across Jefferson and Shelby Counties Monday.
More rain is expected Monday and throughout the week. A message posted to social media by the NWS said, "Several inches of rain will fall through the afternoon at areas that already have roads closed and numerous flooding problems. Pay attention to law enforcement, slow down, take your time, find another route to your destination, and DO. NOT. DRIVE. THROUGH. A. FLOODED. ROAD."
This report will be updated when roads re-open or more roads close.
