In commemoration of Women's History Month the Fort Lauderdale Woman's Club is showcasing several prominent female vocalists of South Florida In commemoration of Women's History Month the Fort Lauderdale Woman's Club is showcasing several prominent female vocalists of South Florida to celebrate "Women in Music'' on March 4, 2022 at the club located at 20 South Andrews, Fort Lauderdale, Fl 33301. Doors open at 6:30 and the showcase begins at 7:00 pm and is $35.00 to attend. Your donation includes hors d’ oeuvres and two drinks.The speakeasy theme is "Women in Music" who have been particularly underrepresented in the blues genre throughout history. Dressing up in speakeasy attire, 1920's to the present is encouraged and we will have a costume contest and raffle prizes. Mary Washington Brooks is the program coordinator. Dottie Kelly won the International Blues Challenge for the Southeast Treasure Coast. Betty Padgett won the South Florida Blues Society band spot and Mary Washington Brooks will be performing in the "National Women in Blues Showcase" in Memphis. Also performing will be Liz Sharp, vocalist and booking agent for Blue Jean Blues, Cheryl Arena, and Cyndy Floyd. Musicians include guitarists, Joey Gilmore, two time winner of the International Blues Challenge and Mike Ancona. Playing drums is Maurice Dukes; keyboardist Jerry Mascaro and saxophonist Stuey Blue will also be accompanying the vocalists. The event is also acting as a fundraiser for our historically designated clubhouse which was built in 1917. Due to both age and weather the clubhouse requires a new roof at a cost of $60,000. The mission of the Fort Lauderdale Woman’s Club (FLWC) is to engage the women of Fort Lauderdale as volunteers who make a recognizable difference in addressing civic, educational, cultural and humanitarian needs in our community and beyond. The FLWC promotes charitable and educational activities through volunteerism and was incorporated before the City of Fort Lauderdale.
