RYE, NY — A highly contagious norovirus sickened about 30 people at the Osborn, a nonprofit senior community in Rye. The outbreak started about a week ago. A spokesman said that the 30 people who were sickened were mostly residents but also some staff, the Journal News said. Several were taken to a hospital because of dehydration, but no new cases were reported in the past two days. The Osborn includes independent and assisted living, rehab and nursing services. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the most common symptoms of norovirus are diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach pain. Outbreaks are common and the virus spreads easily and quickly, from infected people to others through contaminated foods and surfaces. To prevent yourself and others from getting the virus, wash hands often, rinse fruits and vegetables, cook shellfish thoroughly, stay home when sick and for two days after symptoms stop and avoid preparing food for others when sick and for two days after symptoms stop.
