NEW YORK – The New York Department of Agriculture is warning residents about unsolicited seeds that have been mailed to hundreds of homes across the state. The packages have been coming from China and sometimes have been sent in packages that say they contain jewelry, agriculture department officials said. Similar packages have been received in other states and the United States Department of Agriculture is investigating. People who receive seeds should not plant or handle the seeds. They should store them safely in a place children and pets cannot access. Officials believe the mailed seeds are part of a "brushing scam," where people receive unsolicited items from a seller who then posts false customer reviews to boost sales.
