Rockville Centre Finalizes New Superintendent Contract

At a meeting last week, the Rockville Centre Board of Education formally approved a five-year contract for June Chang, the district's new superintendent. His salary will be less than that of outgoing superintendent Dr. William Johnson, who had been with the district for decades. The Board of Education wrote a letter to the community after the Feb. 25 meeting. The board unanimously approved Chang's contract. He was announced as the new superintendent on Feb. 5. Chang is currently the superintendent of the Summit School District in New Jersey. He will finish the year there before starting as Rockville Centre's superintendent on July 1, when Johnson retires. Throughout the rest of the school year, though, the board will be introducing Chang to the community through meet-and-greet sessions. The contract the board negotiated with Chang includes a salary of $290,000. Johnson, who has been superintendent for 34 years, is currently making around $350,000 a year. The board said that there are no raises built in to Chang's contract. Raises will be negotiated after each annual review. There is no incentive or merit pay in the contract. It does allow Chang to accumulate sick and vacation days and carry them over for future use or be paid out for them when leaving the district, but they are capped at 50 accumulated vacation days and 180 sick days.
