ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY —Saturday, August 22, has been declared a national day of action by progressive political groups to protest recent actions taken against the U.S. Postal Service. The rallies come in the wake of a charged political issue around the postal service and the upcoming federal election. A Rockville Centre rally is planned for 11 a.m. at the post office 250 Merrick Avenue. The Long Island activist group hosting the protest is called Indivisible Nassau County and they state in the event invitation: "Buying stamps is not enough. This is a coordinated effort to suppress the vote. History has shown us time and again that the most effective action we can take are peaceful protests." The national protests are organized by MoveOn.org, along with the NAACP and the Working Families Party and have been dubbed #SaveThePostOffice Saturday. Forbes reports that "Trump's suggestion [last week] that he is withholding funding to USPS over his personal objections to mail-in voting has spurred a nationwide effort to financially support the postal service by buying stamps and USPS merchandise, with children in San Francisco even setting up a booth to sell stamps to support the agency." The protests will all begin at 11 a.m. and MoveOn.org states on their website their goal is "to save the post office from Trump and declare that Postmaster General Louis DeJoy must resign."
