Goodwood has a long tradition of cultivating heirloom roses, older varieties that have a fascinating history all their own. Many photographs from the early 1900s show climbing roses on the trellises of the cottages. Senator Hodges was known as a lover of roses (and other amorous pursuits). The cottages and grounds still have many varieties of roses for visitors to enjoy.
