Melanie currently serves as the Trauma Informed Specialist for Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, where she co-leads Lancaster County’s cross-sector trauma informed community initiative. She has trained over 5000 people about trauma, resilience and trauma-informed care, across multiple sectors, including criminal justice, law enforcement, first responders, education, healthcare, human services, government, business, and the faith community. She is a certified trauma instructor with the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Eastern Mennonite University, and Treatment Innovations, and was a 2016-17 Baldwin Fellow with the Lancaster County Community Foundation, where her focus was on trauma, resilience, and trauma-informed communities. Melanie is the author of Grace Goes to Prison: An Inspiring Story of Hope and Humanity. The two years she spent visiting state prisons around Pennsylvania, doing the research for that book, launched her into a radical mid-life career change to do prisoner reentry and trauma work, after two decades working in the business sector. She served for eight years as the Executive Director of Lancaster County’s prisoner reentry coalition, connecting people being released from prison to housing, employment, mentors, addiction treatment, mental health services, and other supports to help them pursue healing and be restored to their communities. She has also served as a consultant to 15 counties across Pennsylvania to guide their formation of local reentry coalitions and develop strategic plans to improve reentry. Her TED talk, titled “Breaking Out of Prison Thinking,” highlights the connections between trauma, addiction, mental health, and criminal justice system involvement. She’s a tireless and passionate advocate for trauma-informed policy and practices, especially in the criminal justice system. Melanie's Ted talk is linked below. FAQs  Do I need to wear a mask?
