Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today: The Arbor Creek Apartments in Raleigh had a fire break out on Thursday. The fire was on the first floor of the two story complex, and some people had to evacuate by jumping from second floor windows. 12 units had to be evacuated, two families were displaced, but no one was injured. (WRAL)William Peace University has opened a new high-tech e-sports and gaming lab. The new opening will allow students to earn degrees in Interactive Design and E-sports & Gaming Administration. This development comes as Raleigh ranks as the second hottest area in the U.S. for tech jobs and is focusing on attracting more e-sport vendors and events to the area. (abc11)A 19-acre site along Atlantic Avenue is being developed into a mixed-use project. The Raleigh Iron Works development is set to become a retail and dining destination. The location will also offer office space, a pedestrian promenade, and more than 220 apartment units. Developers expect office space to be in use by summer and apartments by early 2023. (abc11)Furman Alexander Ford, the financial advisor who stole more than $1.3 million from an elderly woman, was sentenced to 11 years in prison. Ford was advising a 72-year-old woman with her inheritance when he submitted 20 fraudulent letters of withdrawal totaling more than $376,000 paid to himself. Ford also withdrew $1 million from the account in December 2014. (CBS17)The North Carolina State Board of Education has approved an amendment to policy that will remove the requirement for teachers to pay toward their own substitutes when they take personal leave. The amendment requires teachers to give reason if they want to be able to take their leave without paying, however no reason will disqualify them.
