Press release from the City of Rochester: October 26 2020 Today, Monday, October 26, 2020, Councilmember LaShay D. Harris, South District, will join local leaders for an event presented by the Rochester Public Library's Local History and Genealogy Division. The event: Women in Politics: Continuing the Work, will consist of a screening and panel discussion of Election Day 2016. Councilmember Harris said, "Rochester is known for its historic advocacy on voter rights; Susan B. Anthony, Harriet Tubman, and Frederick Douglass fought for women and black citizens to gain the right to vote on the same streets we walk today. Standing on the shoulders of these giants, women have continued to break glass ceilings, and propel themselves to elected office locally. We have a black female Mayor and Council President, as well as many other women holding elected office in the region, and we dream of a not too distant future where a woman will hold the highest office in the land." The evening will start at 6:00pm with a screening of the documentary, followed by a panel discussion on the evolving role of women in American politics since the 2016 election. Produced by the Rochester Documentary Filmmakers group, Election Day 2016 recounts the large gathering of voters at Susan B. Anthony's gravesite on November 8th, 2016. The panel includes Councilmember LaShay D. Harris; Linda Moroney, Director of the film; Deborah Hughes, President and CEO of the Susan B. Anthony Museum & House; Monroe County Legislator Yversha Roman; and Monroe County Legislator Jackie Smith. The event will be moderated by Judge Karen Morris. The program is from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Zoom and requires pre-registration here: https://calendar.libraryweb.org/event/6943627?hs=a.
