WORCESTER, MA — A major part of the Plantation Street bridge replacement in Worcester will take place this week, which will require a full closure of the span, according to MassDOT. Beginning at 8 p.m. Wednesday, MassDOT crews will install a prefabricated section on the west side of the bridge. The bridge will reopen Thursday at 5 a.m. with one lane open heading northbound — a configuration that's been in place since the beginning of autumn. The bridge last closed the weekend of Nov. 14 for demolition of the west side of the span. If weather prevents the work from happening on Wednesday, MassDOT will try again beginning at 3 a.m. Saturday, with the bridge closed until 5 a.m. Monday. Weather forecasts show clear skies through the week. Here's the detour map for the Wednesday night work: When the bridge replacement finishes in spring 2021, there will be sidewalks on both sides, and three travel lanes: a north and southbound lane and a northbound left turn lane. There will also be travel lanes for bikes across the bridge and onto Aitchison Street, according to MassDOT. Learn more on the MassDOT Plantation Street bridge replacement website.
