WORCESTER, MA — MassDOT will begin replacing Mass Pike exit signs this weekend as part of a renumbering project as the state switches to a mileage-based system.
On Sunday, MassDOT crews will begin replacing signs in Boston, working west until the New York border. Then they'll start over heading east into Boston. Each side of the highway will take about two weeks to complete, according to the state.
MassDOT will also begin renumbering exits along Route 6 beginning on Monday in Bourne. The work will take place overnight from around 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The Federal Highway Administration has ordered Massachusetts to switch from sequential exit numbers. The westbound numbers will reflect how far you are from the New York border. For example, the new westbound exit 78 in Sturbridge means the New York border is 78 miles away.
Here's what the westbound exits between Boston and Sturbridge will look like following the switch:
I-84/Sturbridge: Exit 9 becomes 78I-290/395 and Route 12 to Worcester: Exit 10 becomes 90U.S. 20, Route 146 and Route 122A to Worcester: Exit 10A becomes 94Route 122 to Grafton: Exit 11 becomes 96I-495 interchange: Exit 11A becomes 106Route 9 in Framingham: Exit 12 becomes 111Route 30 in Natick/Framingham: Exit 13 becomes 117I-95 interchange: Exits 15A and B become 123A and BRoute 16 in West Newton: Exit 16 becomes 125Washington Street in Newton: Exit 17 becomes 127Cambridge Street/Allston: Exit 20 becomes 131 South Station: Exit 24 becomes 134South Boston: Exit 25 becomes 135
