MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL — The Mountain Brook Police Department has seen an increase in scammers calling victims claiming to be a police officer. According to police, the offenders claim that the victim has a warrant and threatens arrest if payment is not made via gift cards. Officers said don't fall for it. According to the Federal Trade Commission, there are several red flags to look for to avoid being ripped off — and, yes, even stressed out. Scammers pretend to be from an agency you know.It's not uncommon for scammers to use technology to change the phone number that appears on your caller ID. When they do that, it may look as if it is an actual police department or other governmental agency is calling you. 2. Scammers claim there is a "problem."Scammers might say you're in trouble with the government (Ex: warrant for arrest) or you owe money. 3. Scammers pressure you to act immediately.Scammers want you to act before you have time to think. If you're on the phone, they might tell you not to hang up so you can't check out their story. They might threaten to arrest you, sue you, take away your driver's or business license, or deport you. They might say your computer is about to be corrupted. 4. Scammers tell you to pay in a specific way.They often insist that you pay by sending money through a money transfer company or by putting money on a gift card and then giving them the number on the back. Some will send you a check (that will later turn out to be fake), tell you to deposit it, and then send them money.
