Worcester 2021 Election: 2 File To Run For City Council

WORCESTER, MA — The November 2020 Massachusetts election won't be certified until next week, but candidates across the state are already lining up for the 2021 election, including in Worcester. Since Oct. 30, two more candidates have filed paperwork to run for Worcester City Council in 2021: Thu Nguyen and Yenni Desroches. They join Johanna Hampton-Dance, who filed paperwork to run against incumbent District 2 Councilor Candy Mero-Carlson in July. Nguyen, a Main South resident, serves as director of projects for the Worcester Southeast Asian Coalition. Desroches, a Newton Square resident, is running for the District 5 City Council seat held by Matthew Wally, and is the cofounder of the Humanity First movement, which grew out of the Andrew Yang presidential campaign. In 2021, each City Council and School Committee seat will be up for election. Voters will also pick the mayor, who serves as the head of the City Council. In the 2019 municipal races, 13 people ran for an at-large seat on the Council, including incumbents. Only one incumbent in a district seat — District 5's Wally — faced a challenge in the general election. Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated the neighborhood where Desroches lives.
