SARASOTA, FL — Current Sarasota City Commissioner Hagen Brody, a Democrat, has filed to run for the Sarasota County Commission's District 2 seat in this year's election. If he wins the Democratic primary in August, he could face off against the Republican incumbent, Christian Ziegler, who was elected to the position in November 2018. Ziegler also serves as vice chair of the Republican Party of Florida. He hasn't filed to run for re-election yet, the Observer reported. "We need to return power back to our residents and move us towards a more sustainable, inclusive, and prosperous Sarasota," Brody told SRQ magazine. "Leadership on local issues most important to the residents of the City of Sarasota, it's surrounding neighborhoods, and Siesta Key is needed now more than ever on the County Commission." Brody has already been endorsed by three Sarasota County School Board members – Shirley Brown, Jane Goodwin and Tom Edwards, ABC 7 reported. "As a product of our public school system, Hagen deeply understands our community and will fight for the issues important to our residents, families, and children," Goodwin said. Brody, who holds an at-large seat on the Sarasota City Commission, grew up in Sarasota, graduating from Sarasota High School. The former state prosecutor was elected to the city commission in 2017. His term expires this year.
