NEW YORK CITY — A Queens teen could spend the rest of his life behind bars following a flurry of shootings that left an off-duty NYPD officer wounded, prosecutors said. Chad Collie, 19, faces a first-degree attempted murder in connection to the Tuesday incidents, said Melinda Katz, district attorney for Queens. Another man — Jayare Robinson, 18 — faces an attempted murder in second degree charge, Katz said. Prosecutors said the pair tried to carjack an off-duty rookie cop, 22, in the Rockaways. "As alleged, the defendants – one of them brandishing a gun– confronted the victim, an off-duty police officer, as he sat in his car at a red light," Katz said in a statement. "After the off-duty officer got out of his car, defendant Collie allegedly fired three shots, one of which hit the victim in his shoulder. The defendants then fled and defendant Collie allegedly shot at uniformed officers, who were able to apprehend them. This blatant disregard for human life must be answered with certain justice." The shooting is only the latest in a citywide spate of gun violence, some of which has been directed at NYPD officers. A gunman shot and killed two cops — Wilbert Mora, 27, and Jason Rivera, 22 — last month. The violence in part prompted President Joe Biden's visit to the city Thursday, where he's anticipated to unveil anti-gun violence measures. Collie is accused of walking up to the rookie cop's car, tapping on the window with a gun and shooting at the off-duty officer three times, hitting him once in the shoulder, authorities said. He then fired a single shot at NYPD officers who chased after him, prosecutors said. That shot missed the cops before they were able to arrest Collie and Robinson, authorities said. Collie appeared for arraignment Thursday on a 13 criminal counts. The most serious charge — attempted murder in the first degree — carries a penalty of 25 years to life in prison if convicted. Robinson likewise was arraigned Thursday on an 11-count complaint. His most serious charge carries a maximum prison sentence of up to 25 years if convicted.
