POLK COUNTY, FL — If you're driving past a school crossing guard Friday, thank them for their work because it's officially Crossing Guard Appreciation Day. Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a Proclamation declaring Feb. 4 as Crossing Guard Appreciation Day in Florida, according to the governor's office. "We are proud to stand with Gov. DeSantis and say 'Thank you' to our School Crossing Guards,' Sheriff Grady Judd said. "They provide a valuable service to our community by making things safer for our children as they go to and from school each day. The next time you see a Crossing Guard, give them a wave and thank them for their service - I know they'll appreciate it." The Polk County Sheriff's Office provides school crossing guard services through funds provided by the Polk County Board of County Commissioners, according to a news release. This vital program places adult crossing guards at selected hazardous school crossings to ensure the safety of our elementary school children walking to and from school, the sheriff's office said. The Polk County Sheriff's Office employs 130 part-time crossing guards and 36 substitutes who are assigned to 124 Polk County School crossings.
