WORCESTER, MA — The Worcester City Council will consider a proposal to rename a street after Lt. Jason Menard, the firefighter who died battling a blaze along Stockholm Street in 2019.
Local resident Rich Lundin has petitioned the Council to rename Chester Terrace after Menard because his family has lived near it for about 50 years, according to City Council documents. Chester Terrace is a short street in a neighborhood north of Assumption University connecting Chester Street and Westport Road.
Menard died on Nov. 13, 2019, after he became trapped on the upper floor of a home at 7 Stockholm St. Menard helped two other firefighters escape the blaze before he was overwhelmed by it.
Menard was Lundin's cousin's son, and lived near Chester Street where Menard grew up. Lundin suggested Chester Terrace be renamed because it's between the Menard's childhood home and his grandparent's house. The street also doesn't have any houses directly on it, making a name change easier. Lundin has also suggested creating a Menard Square where Chester Terrace and Chester Street intersect.
As of November, fire officials were still in talks with the Menard family about a physical memorial for him, according to Chief Michael Lavoie.
The Chester Terrace name change will go before the City Council on Tuesday, and will likely be referred to a Council subcommittee for further discussions.
