CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have upgraded charges in the death of Malik Fidel Whitney, according to the department. Darrel McKinley is now charged with murder; he was previously charged with voluntary manslaughter. Detectives continued to investigate this incident and received new evidence that led them to upgrade the charge to murder, per police. The investigation into this case is active and ongoing.
