BERKELEY, CA — A 31-year-old man has been arrested Jan. 27 in connection with a Berkeley crowbar attack that night involving a victim who is in his 60's, police said. The victim was hospitalized with injuries to his head and arms, according to the Berkeley Police Department. Alameda County prosecutors on Monday charged the suspect with assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, receiving stolen property and criminal enhancements, police said. The attack occurred while the victim was reporting to authorities vehicle windows were being smashed in the area of Bancroft Way and Fourth Street at around 8:30 p.m., police said. The victim also saw an RV ablaze with the suspect standing on the RV's roof, police said. "While trying to report the incident, the suspect ran toward the man with a crowbar in his hand," police said in a statement. "While running away from the suspect, the man fell to the ground—where the suspect repeatedly struck the man with the crowbar. After the violent attack, the suspect took the man's cellphone and left the area. When officers arrived, they located the suspect on the west side of the train tracks (near Bancroft Way) and arrested him."
