HOOVER, AL — The Regions Tradition and PGA TOUR Champions announced today that the 2020 golf tournament and associated events scheduled for September 23-27 at Greystone Golf & Country Club will be cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis.
The decision was made in conjunction with local and state health officials as the climate surrounding the coronavirus pandemic continues to fluctuate.
"This was a tremendously difficult decision to make, but it was important to be cautious in our approach as the health and safety of all constituents tied to the Regions Tradition is and always has been our No. 1 priority," said Gene Hallman, President and CEO of Bruno Event Team. "Canceling the 2020 tournament was ultimately deemed to be the most logical decision. Our focus now shifts to hosting a successful tournament in 2021."
Next year's Regions Tradition is scheduled for May 5-9, 2021, at Greystone Golf & Country Club.
During its 29-year history, the Regions Tradition has hosted the game's legends as one of five major championships contested annually on PGA TOUR Champions. As well, the tournament has generated in excess of $19 million for local charity, with Children's of Alabama serving as the primary beneficiary. That tradition will continue in 2020.
"We are extremely pleased to announce that more than $750,000 will be donated to local charities this year, even with the cancellation of the event," Hallman said. "These charitable donations are due to the generosity of our title sponsor, Regions Bank, and many other important community partners who contribute to the impact the Regions Tradition each year."
All tickets purchased for the 2020 Regions Tradition will be refunded, with the Birdies for Charity program remaining open to donations until late September.
