RIVERHEAD, NY — An instructional staff member at the Riverhead Central School District has tested positive for the coronavirus, according to an email sent to families Monday night. "This evening, the district was notified by the Suffolk County Department of Health that an instructional staff member at Riverhead Middle School tested positive for COVID‐19," the letter said. The staff member is required to quarantine and will not return to school until clearance is received from the SCDOH, the letter said. District officials will meet Tuesday to determine next steps. A total of 29 students who were in contact with the staff member may have to quarantine, the district said. Out of "an abundance of caution", Dr. Stephen Hudson, the middle school principal, and his staff notified those families directly to inform them that the students must stay home from school Tuesday and Wednesday, the district said. The students will participate in remote learning on those days. If the SCDOH determines that these students are not required to quarantine, the district will contact the families and allow the students attend in person on Wednesday, the district said. "We are closely monitoring this situation and will provide you with updates as we learn more. Asalways, the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff is our priority," wrote Christine Tona, interim superintendent of schools.
